of the Illinois Prairie Path

& Great Western Trail

Saturday, April 23rd, 2005
Starting at 9:00AM - Rain or Shine!

In observance of Earth Day 2005; The Illinois Prairie Path not-for-profit corporation (IPPc) in cooperation with the Friends of the Great Western Trails has scheduled its annual trail cleanup for Saturday, April 23 rain or shine.                Volunteers are needed! Our goal this year is to clean all 61 miles of the Illinois Prairie Path (IPP) and all 11.5 miles of the Great Western Trail (GWT). Hopefully, we can duplicate the excellent cleanup that was done last year for Earth Day. We are asking for your help. We want you to help us and rollup your sleeves (but wear work gloves) and pick up litter along these trails. Bring friends and family (and garbage bags to fill) on Saturday, April 23rd.

If you, your family and/or co-workers are interested in helping us, please contact one

How you can help the Illinois Prairie Path:

Opportunities to participate in trail improvement and trail management issues

coordinated by The Illinois Prairie Path not-for-profit corporation (IPPc):

ό     Monthly (warm weather) workdays held on (usually) the third Saturday morning of the month (Spring thru Fall) at a location along the trail to add, improve/maintain or change a trail amenity; example: painting a water pump, weeding a flower box, etc. No special skills required, just energy and a community spirit.

ό     Prairie Burns are conducted every spring (weather permitting) to prepare the several prairies maintained by The IPPc for their annual growth. Volunteers are needed to help rake and prepare the prairies for the burn.

ό     Map box refiller. Just volunteer to watch over a map box and refill the free maps (we provide) as needed.

ό     Trash monitor. Adopt a trashcan and watch if it is being maintained by the contracted service provider (currently Waste Management). Call Waste Management if they do not maintain the containers as scheduled.

To help with the above tasks send an email to FrndsGrtWstnTrl@aol.com

Ψ     Be a low impact trail user. Pack in and pack out any lunch bags, drink containers, etc. that you bring along when using the trails. Your dues are used to pay for and maintain 16 Trash containers (and one Port-to-let at Army Trail Rd) along the trail.

Ψ     Report illegal dumping on the trails in DuPage County to the Div. of Transportation, 630-407-6883 In Kane County call the Forest Preserve Dept. at 630-232-5980. In Cook County call the respective Village Hall where the dumping occurred (Berkeley, Hillside, Bellwood or Maywood).

Ψ     Buy a shirt, patch, sticker or gift membership from the IPP website at www.ipp.org or order by mail.
