August, 1999 Dear Colleagues and Friends, Congressman Doug Bereuter of Nebraska, along with Congressman Earl Blumenauer of Oregon and a number of other Representatives are sponsoring legislation, H.R.2339, to amend the National Trails System Act to create a new category of long-distance trails and to designate the American Discovery Trail as the first trail under that category. The American Discovery Trail (ADT) is an exciting project, developing our nation's first coast-to-coast, multi-use trail. The ADT will be the backbone of a growing trail system, connecting 6 of the 8 national scenic trails, 10 of the 11 national historic trails, and dozens of local and regional trails. The trail is deliberately routed through or near the major metropolitan areas of San Francisco, Denver, Omaha, Kansas City, St.Louis, Chicago, Cincinnati, and Washington, DC. Bikes Belong Coalition supports the efforts of Congressman Bereuter, the Congressional Bicycle Caucus, the Congressional Trails Caucus, and all of the co-sponsors of the National Discovery Trails Act. We ask you to support this very worthwhile initiative by contacting your Representative in Congress and by informing your friends, employees, customers, and members to do the same. Here is how you and your contacts should proceed: Write, email, or phone the office of your Representative in Congress and ask her/him to join their colleagues as a co-sponsor of H.R. 2339, the National Discovery Trails Act. If you do not have your Representative's phone number you can reach them through the Capitol Operator at 202-224-3121. To obtain their email on the web go to: http://www.house.gov/house/MemberWWW.html Thank you for your help in this important effort. Best, Thanks! Richard Olken, Executive Director |
